What does the job involve?

Summary: Sets up and operates various types and sizes of powered and hand shears to cut sheet metal stock.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to:

  • Lays out material from template, blueprint or shop order to obtain the maximum utilization of the material.
  • Determines the proper sequence of cuts to make parts and to minimize the number of cuts.
  • Sets up shears to perform any sheering operation with the capacity of the machine by aligning sheet stock on table or shear arms, setting, fastening, adjusting stops and guides and setting “back gauges” by means of an indicator, template, or by actual measurements.
  • Operates shears to perform such typical operations as shearing parts involving several angular cuts to complete each part. Holds parts to exacting tolerances when required.
  • Checks finished parts for conformance to specifications using templates and measuring instruments.
  • Utilizes call stock as required.
  • Determines condition of shear blades as to when they should be turned or sharpened.
  • Performs rework, repair, cleaning and other associated operations relating to the work described.
  • May set-up and operate similar machinery (saws, shears, etc).
  • Follow all Senior policies and procedure.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree; or 6 months- 1 year of related experience and/ or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skills:

  • Language: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply a general understanding to carry out detailed, written and oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Mathematical Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Other Abilities: Must be familiar with the coding of various alloys.

Tools used:

  • Twenty- four inch metal scale graduated to 100th of an inch, crescent wrench, plastic hammer, micrometers, metal files, air motor and small tools.

Materials used:

  • All stainless alloys in the form of sheet and coil stock. Layout ink to identify plys.
