What does the job involve?

Evaluates Special Process procedures, specifications, and techniques to manufacturing functions. Trains, coaches and facilitates individuals and groups in various Quality Special Processes. Assures achievement of company goals and adherence to policies and procedures by monitoring the activities of all direct employees. Coordinate/schedule all Special Process audits either NADCAP or customer-related.  Acts as the company’s Principal NDT Level 3 Examiner. This position reports directly to the Manager of Quality. Has supervisory responsibilities for the NDT department.

What will my responsibilities include?

  • Initiates company-wide policies and procedures to facilitate the type of organization needed to accomplish the company’s quality assurance / Special Process objectives and goals. Supervises NDT department personnel.
  • Provides/designates direct technical support to Nondestructive Testing, Manufacturing, Material Joining Engineers, Materials and Process Laboratory, and Process Engineering on programs that require Special Processes.
  • Determines /designates the preparation of documentation and procedures to control all aspects of Special Processes to meet all requirements of customer/company specification requirements.
  • Renders final interpretation decisions when evaluating test results in terms of existing specifications and has sufficient background in applicable materials technology to assist in establishing test and acceptance criteria when none are otherwise available.
  • Determines/designates preparation and/or performs training to meet the requirements for all NDT qualifications and certifications. Maintain NDT certification records. Prepares, conducts, and grades examinations for qualification and certification for all NDT personnel. (Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3)
  • Determines/designates individual (s) to perform Special process audits and surveys for both internal and vendor-related Special Processes.
  • Determines/designates that the correct test procedure has been used and recognizes the use of improper methods or techniques.
  • Interfaces with customers on technical issues concerning Special Processes, and issues on test techniques used during the manufacturing process of hardware.
  • Provides direct technical support to the Materials and Processing Laboratory in the areas of training or assistance concerning metallurgical and/or material joining problems.
  • Determines /Designates individual (s) to prepare and perform training for current as well as new employees in certified and non-certified inspection methods such as visual weld defect evaluation, weld symbol interpretation, thickness gauging capillary honeycomb inspection, resistance weld inspection, and braze inspection.
  • Designates/prepares inspection procedures as required.
  • Review all new programs for cost estimating and inspection feasibility.
  • Investigates new equipment and materials relative to improving existing programs or implementing new programs.
  • Organizes facts and figures used to develop a department budget. Cost control programs and standards. Analyzes and interprets quality data, utilizes the computer to obtain necessary information and reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. May require training in hazardous material handling, dependent upon job assignment.

What key skills and experience do I need?

  • Very good analytical skills. Good investigative and error-spotting skills.
  • Good at creating reports using various tools and applications.
  • Should be good at communication and persuasion.
  • Being able to perform risk analysis to the satisfaction of the stakeholders or departments.
  • Able to manage progress and status of critical action items.
  • Familiarity with aerospace/Nadcap special process controls.
  • Experience in audit process; both performing internal audits and taking the lead in special process audits.
  • NDT Level III cert.req.MIL‑STD‑410,NAS 410 and may have cert. Per ASNT‑TC‑IA(RT,PT,UT,VT,MT). Required to obtain and keep current a valid IRRSP Certificate.

What qualifications should I have?

Education:

  • Associate’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience

Experience:

  • 5 to 15 years experience as Engineer in Aerospace
