What does the job involve?

Summary: Inspects machined, fabricated or welded parts, precision assemblies and tools by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Determines nominal dimensions, deviations, out of tolerance conditions and sequence of inspection points, exercising ingenuity and originality to minimize setup and machine time.
  • Evaluates specifications, tool drawings, analyzes engineering prints, sketches and all other referenced data.
  • Devises and formulates machine commands, instructions and codes that determine an inspection sequencing of computerized coordinate measuring machines where it is required to exercise a complete knowledge of inspection practices.
  • Applies company and customer specifications as well as knowledge of sheet metal and machine shop practice.
  • Determines and defines axis and part locations to inspect all necessary dimensions.
  • Inputs machine control media, commands or instructions by operating of terminals, input devices or other control systems.
  • Operates computer coordinate measuring machine to measure critical dimensions and coordinate dimensions to exacting tolerances.
  • Monitors machine while in automatic operation for conformance to machine instructions/commands and records measurement readings.
  • Compares recorded measurements to blueprint dimensions and tolerances and notifies specified persons of discrepancies.
  • Determines reference points by making surface table layout, performs manual and computer-aided trigonometric and mathematical calculations and trial machine measurements.
  • Coordinates and recommends changes in design, tooling and planning operations sequences to engineering, inspection, tooling and supervisory personnel.

Qualifications:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.  Individual must have the ability to work with coordinate measuring machine MITUTOYO 1010 and GEO PAC 3000 software.  Must be proficient will all applicable inspection tools and gages used for dimensional inspection and layout.

Education and/or Experience: 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience as CMM Inspector required
  • Other inspection experience helpful. Must have knowledge of GEO PAC 3000 and CAD design software.

Language Skills: 

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as blue prints, drawings, work orders, safety rules. 
  • Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: 

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. 
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. 
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: 

  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.

MATERIALS WORKED WITH: 

  • Various types of metals.          

TOOLS USED: 

  • Machinist’s hand tools, scales, precision measuring instruments such as dial indicators, surface and depth gauges, micrometers, calipers, protractors, go-no-go gauges, etc.                        

EQUIPMENT USED: 

  • Assembly jig fixtures
