Based in Congleton, Cheshire, Senior Aerospace Bird Bellows was established in 1975 as a family run operation serving the petro-chemical and gas industries. Since then, we have evolved to become one of the industry leaders in the design, development and manufacture of pressure duct systems, flexible joints and insulation for highly regulated industries. We have established customers in aerospace (both civil and military), as well as in the nuclear, oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.

What does the job involve?

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Manage and maintain the company Health and Safety Management System (HSMS) which is aligned to ISO45001 and integrated with the Quality Management system.
  2. Manage and maintain the company Environmental Management System which is aligned and continues to meet the requirements of ISO14001 and integrated with the Quality Management system.
  3. Report on the performance of the HSMS and EMS, providing recommendations for improvement.
  4. Manage a system that will ensure the Occupational health system is effective and manages work place hazards and absences, liaising with HR where required. 
  5. Manage the Safe Systems of Work programme to ensure that team Leaders and Line Managers are informed of updates and train teams at periodic intervals.
  6. Hold periodic reviews with the Management Team, so that the effectiveness of the integrated management systems can be communicated and continually improved. 
  7. Plan work accordingly so the management systems continue to comply with legislative requirements, by monitoring and adapting to changes in legislation and regulations. 
  8. Update, issue control and distribute Manuals, Procedures and Instructions associated with the Integrated Management System.
  9. Authority to approve procedures and instructions relating to health, safety environmental and safety matters.
  10. Manage the identification, recording and resolution of health, safety and environmental issues, including Investigating incidents ensuring an adequate root cause process is undertaken with appropriate response and effective corrective action.
  11. Manage and coach the Risk Assessment Team, Departmental Managers, Team Leaders and Employee Representatives, to manage risks locally within their areas & conduct risk assessments of the operational processes and manufacturing methods.
  12. Complete HSE audits and assign actions ensuring the actions communicated to responsible people.
  13. Manage corrective actions that are produced from HSE Observations, audits and Risk Assessments etc. in a timely manner by allocation to departmental Managers and holding reviews to ensure the system is effective.
  14. Manage displays and notice boards with HSE data maintaining good visual standards.
  15. Manage the risk of fire and other major incidents, performing emergency response/evacuation practices at the required frequency.  Maintain adequate arrangements for coping with major environmental or health and safety incidents.
  16. Manage the Fire Warden, First Aid and Emergency Spill Response Teams, providing periodic refresher training at required intervals.
  17. Management of the Occupational health programme. Liaising with occupational health to eliminate or reduce impacts to health and illness.
  18. Chair and manage the Health, Safety & Environmental Committee to communicate health and safety issues and to promote safe working practices.
  19. Manage the COSHH programme and implement suitable and effective control measures to reduce exposure to harmful substances.
  20. Ensure the availability of appropriate equipment including the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), local exhaust ventilation, first aid equipment and consumables, fire fighting equipment and emergency response spill kits etc.  Ensure this equipment is adequately maintained and tested as required.
  21. Manage the purchase, issue and control of Personal Protective Equipment and work wear through line managers.
  22. Manage transfer note record, Waste carrier licences and consider the environmental impacts of our suppliers by continual communication of our systems in line with ISO 14001.
  23. Manage contractor records such as Permits to work, contractor inductions and associated RAMS.
  24. Encourage company initiatives which promote the use of the Waste Hierarchy - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover in preference to disposal via landfill. 
  25. Liaise with local companies, interested parties and external authorities on relevant environmental and health and safety matters.
  26. Analyse and report data associated with environmental and health and safety performance to Management Review and Group.
  27. Manage the security systems which will include CCTV, site access & security services (key holders).
  28. Develop and plan the environmental and health and safety objectives and targets in conjunction with the CEO and Management Team aligned to the ZERO HARM goal and in line with Senior Group.
  29. Manage and implement the Net Zero strategy and sustainability.

Associated responsibilities:

  1. Support the CEO in ensuring a high standard of health and safety is maintained throughout the company and ensure that all practices support the company’s environmental and health and safety policies.
  2. Liaise with the Group HSE Director/HSE Advisor, participating as necessary in any Group initiatives.
  3. Support the effective planning, execution and reporting of internal audits of the integrated management system.  Liaise with customer and third party auditors and host audit visits as required.
  4. Ensure that all work activities and records comply with Company Policies, Procedures and Codes of Practice.

What key skills, experience and qualifications do I need?

Experience and knowledge

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years’ industry experience working closely with production in a manufacturing environment.
  • Developed and implemented HSE management systems that demonstrate improvements and reduce incidents.
  • Demonstrated experience of working alongside Senior Managers.
  • Developing safety metrics that align to business objectives.
  • Demonstrated experience of reducing impacts to the environment and reducing costs to an organisation.
  • Demonstrated use of KPI’s for measuring performance.
  • Demonstrated experience of leading a team of personnel.
  • Is willing to accept and work in an environment that is working to change management.
  • Basic knowledge of machinery across mechanical and electrical functions.
  • Knowledge of safe systems of work that can be applied when developing work plans.
  • Experience of budget management.
  • Experience in people management.

Qualifications and training

Essential

  • Diploma or equivalent in Health, Safety, Environment.
  • Member of IOSH.
  • Level 3 in Line Management.
