Project Engineer III
What does the job involve?
Summary: The primary objective for the Project Engineer III position is to provide technical leadership of New Product Development programs with the internal IPDT (Integrated Product Development Team; i.e. design engineers, design drafters, manufacturing engineering, test lab technicians, program managers, etc.) and external customer. The IPDT may require the candidate to lead small (>5, <15 person) or multiple engineering teams, typically co-located. The candidate must use knowledge of engineering discipline, processes, and tools in order to develop and maintain an overall project Master Schedule aligned with customer milestones. Within the project Master Schedule, the candidate must develop project subtasks to drive the internal IPDT to ensure designs are compliant to customer technical requirements and procurement specifications. Within these project subtasks of the Master Schedule, the Project Engineer III position would also be responsible to prepare, review, approve, and ensure the completion of: engineering drawings (internal manufacturing and customer drawings), engineering documentation to support Qualification/Certification efforts (i.e. ATP, QTPs, etc.), and engineering analysis to support Qualification/Certification efforts (produced by self or providing technical guidance to supporting engineers); including but not limited to: stress analysis, pressure drop analysis, thermal analysis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general supervision, must be able to perform a variety of job duties including, but not limited to:
- Technical Proposals
- Preliminary to Detailed Design of customer Line Replacement Units (LRUs)
- Development Part Fabrication Technical Support
- Qualification / Certification testing thru Entry-into-Service (EIS)
- Sustaining Engineering Efforts
- Conducting project status and process presentations for leadership and external customers. As required, the candidate will defend technical positions.
- Interface with vendors and suppliers to ensure product and project compliance and communicate any non-compliance and the results of any internal project audits to pertinent parties.
- Mentor and coach lower level engineers and participate and/or lead in internal and external audits (i.e. AS9100 audits, customer quality audits, etc.).
- Utilize engineering knowledge and principals to identify and propose technical improvements to designs and methodologies to enhance efficiency and/or effectiveness related to projects or processes.
- Understand the functions and roles of support groups within the IPDT.
- Use good communication skills, as well as the ability to be inquisitive and collective in thinking, to work with the IPDT and customer and collaborate on ideas and thoughts in resolving complex problems.
- Have a higher understanding of the business model and its objectives, and recognize, communicate, and contribute to new business opportunities to the leadership team.
- Have knowledge of the technical needs and ability to understand what the customer is looking for.
- Shall be experienced practitioners of project management techniques and tools.
- Clearly and succinctly communicate project status and risks.
- Ensure timely information flow among the IPDT to ensure timely completion of project tasks.
- Gain cooperation within the internal IPDT to ensure completion of project tasks.
- Possess the ability to interact with customers (internally and externally) and also use influence skills with the customer to mitigate major program risks, and to negotiate change of project scope or Master Schedules. The influence skills would also be vital within the IPDT to attain project milestones.
- Support manufacturing team during the Product Development Phase (i.e. initial design for manufacturability and redesigns, as required during the development phase).
- Recognized as an emerging authority within the leadership team in current position.
- 25% or less travel.
- Follow all Senior policies and procedures.
- Other duties with the work as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering. M.S. Preferred.
- 5 – 10+ years of experience in metallic or composite ducting and motion compensator design per ARP 699 guidelines as Project / Systems Engineering Focal, or equivalent experience in ECS (Environmental Control System), bleed air, or AMS (air management system) full-system or component design in the following industries:
- Valves (pneumatic or electro mechanical)
- Heat Exchangers
- Turbo Machinery
- Fuel Tank Inert Systems (FTIS, OBIGGS, OBOGGS, NGS, etc.)
- Wing-Anti Ice Systems
- Ram Air Systems
- High Pressure or Low Pressure pneumatic systems
- Structural design
- Experience with aircraft certification to EASA, Transport Canada, CAAC, and/or FAA 14 CFR FAR 25 requirements.
- Experience from program award (kick-off) to Milestones such as: PDR (Preliminary Design Review), CDR (Critical Design Review), PRR (Production Readiness Review), SOF (Safety of Flight), EIS (Entry-into-Service).
- Experience delegating work and supervising non-direct reports (engineering support staff: design engineers, analysts, drafters, test technicians).
- Experience writing certification documentation, such as: ATP, QTP, QTR, etc.
- Experience with sheet metal and/or composite manufacturing / forming processes.
- Experience with the MRB process, and preferred engineering disposition authority.
- Test experience per RTCA-DO/160 or MIL-STD-810 (vibration and environmental tests)
- Participates and/or leads in internal and external audits.
- Thorough understanding of industry specifications, such as MIL, AN, MS, NAS, ASTM, AMS, etc.
- Experience in mentoring role of junior engineers desired.
- Preferred experience with analysis tools such as FEA / FEM tools MSC NASTRAN / PATRAN, ANSYS, ATA NASTRAN / FEMAP.
- Preferred experience with CAD software (CATIA V5 or Solidworks).
- Preferred test experience with LabVIEW data acquisition / control VIs.

- Language: Must have excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate in English (verbally and written) effectively with all levels of employees within the company.
- Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed, written and oral instructions. Ability to solve problems involving many variables in various situations.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Other Abilities: Must have good project management skills. Must be able to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to read / support the creation of 3D models and 2D drawings with dimensioning and tolerance per ANSI/ASME Y14.5 standards.
