Based in Congleton, Cheshire, Senior Aerospace Bird Bellows was established in 1975 as a family run operation serving the petro-chemical and gas industries. Since then, we have evolved to become one of the industry leaders in the design, development and manufacture of pressure duct systems, flexible joints and insulation for highly regulated industries. We have established customers in aerospace (both civil and military), as well as in the nuclear, oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.

What does the job involve?

Key duties and responsibilities:

  1. Read, interpret and understand engineering drawings and associated shop packet paperwork (ie Job Card, Kitting Lists and Work Instructions) in order to determine how products are to be correctly manufactured.
  2. Ensure that any measuring or production equipment used (and requiring calibration) is within its re-calibration date prior to use, reporting any expired items to the Team Leader
  3. Select tools, check condition and set up in accordance with job card and/or work instructions, reporting any defective, broken or excessively worn tooling to the Team Leader.  Ensure that all tooling is correctly and safely stored and located after use.
  4. Ensure that all production related work activities and records comply with relevant quality standards and NADCAP requirements. This will include but may not be limited to a visual test and theoretical tests in line with associated standards.
  5. Demonstrate a commitment to quality and continuous improvement. 
  6. Follow manual welding procedures and schedules to weld product in accordance with the   information contained therein so that they are consistently produced and that quality is maintained.
  7. Maintain a suitable qualified manual welder status by producing weld tests that pass the approvals required both internally and as specified by customer standards.
  8. You will be required to visually examine all the work you produce and highlight any discrepancies to either the team leader or welding engineers where appropriate.
  9. Follow all guidance on the controls of the manual welding process such as but not limited to NADCAP guidelines for identification of materials and filler wire control.
  10. Visually check the part prior to starting work to ensure it meets the standards required.
  11. During each Job Card operation, check the quality of your work and confirm that it conforms to the requirements by recording & stamping the operation complete with any required measurements.  Verify that the product is free from foreign objects prior to passing to the next stage of processing.
  12. Attend training or participate in improvement events as required.  Support the Team Leader in the training of new or temporary personnel.
  1. Partake in cross-functional training to maintain a minimum of 4 in one coverage across all processes within the business.
  2. Provide support and have the flexibility to move to another Production Team, should operational demands require it.

Associated responsibilities:

  1. Promote workspace organisation in accordance with Lean 5S principles and generally help to maintain a high standard of housekeeping throughout the factory.
  2. Maintain a high standard of health and safety based upon safe working practices. 
  3. Ensure that all work activities and records comply with Company Policies, Procedures   and Codes of Practice.
  4. Ensure that their stamp is kept securely and understand that use of the stamp denotes confirmation that the work is to the required standard and that they accept responsibility for their work on that part and as detailed on the Job Card.

What key skills, experience and qualifications do I need?

Experience and knowledge

Essential

  • Experienced in working within an engineering environment
  • Manual TIG Welding experience on thin materials - generally 0.4mm – 3mm thick
  • Experience of working with manufacturing jigs and assembly aids

Desirable

  • Experience of welding exotic alloys

Qualifications and training

Essential

NVQ Level 3 Welding Engineering apprenticeship

Desirable

  • Evidence of Aerospace standard welding approvals

Job related skills and abilities

Essential

  • Ability to inspect work to both company and customer standards
  • Ability to read and work from engineering drawings
  • Ability to follow “job cards”
  • Ability to interpret welding procedures and schedules

Desirable

  • Experience of working with Titanium, Stainless steel and Nickel alloy materials
