We are currently seeking a full-time Director of Engineering who will oversee both of our San Diego area sites, located in Kearny Mesa and El Cajon.

What does the job involve?

The Director of Engineering plans, coordinates, and directs the Engineering departments and programs of the Jet Products and Ketema sites, designed to ensure effective engineering processes, techniques, quality control and quality assurance of the production of products consistent with established standards and/or customer requirements. Oversees and ensures the business meets its overall engineering objectives.

What will my responsibilities include?

  • Develops and establishes strategic objectives and goals to improve overall engineering performance; implements objectives and procedures concerning the engineering processes.
  • Oversees the creation, development and improvements of manufacturing methods in conformance with program requirements and objectives
  • Plans and directs the overall Engineering personnel and activities of the company; effectively using Strategy Deployment.
  • Assigns duties, responsibilities, and projects, prepares work schedules of employees engaged in production, tool planning and programming. Ensures planning, programming, and tooling schedules meet output demand.
  • Determines staffing requirements and directs or oversees personnel processes.
  • Determines the requirements and provides for the review and assignment, of engineering staff functions to establish an environment which fosters teamwork and the utilization of statistical and analytical skills to achieve the highest potential of the organization in support of the business’s objectives.
  • Directs, coordinates, and maintains financial and budget activities involved in the engineering processes or activities so the needs of the facility are anticipated, and quality is properly controlled.
  • Reviews and approves customers’ product design (including engineering design change flow downs etc.) for compliance with engineering principles, organization standards and industry/customer specification requirements.
  • Evaluates and analyzes manufacturing process, product, materials and/or equipment specifications and performance requirements with company capabilities.
  • Analyzes and solves problems from basic engineering principles, theories and concepts to a wide range of complex or advanced problems. Proactively addresses resource issues to ensure project timelines are met.
  • Oversees engineering audits and engineering management review of ISO 9001.
  • Prepares, reviews, and translates 3 dimensional models and/or drawings into format compatible with system capabilities.
  • Develops and maintains key performance indicators for processes. Develops and configures performance measurement tools utilizing queries, spreadsheets and engineering software tools.
  • Oversees customer technical concerns and/or initiate root cause analysis. Reviews contract and purchase orders to ensure engineering specifications and requirements are communicated and manufacturing plans, product verification tests and inspections are completed.
  • Establishes and maintains an estimating and engineering system to recognize, evaluate and implement cost-effective elements of the business’s capability or potential into the bid and proposal process.
  • Provides day to day supervision and support, to include recruiting, managing, training and development, evaluating performance, and providing employee discipline in the assigned areas.
  • Coordinates with other departments to resolve design, supplier, and production issues.
  • Works with various other Senior divisions to share best practices and implement process improvements as applicable.
  • Establishes and maintains relations and communications with customer technical or engineering representatives to promote the Division’s capability and potential; and to ward off potential problems or conflicts.
  • Provides leadership in the development and coordination of the business’s Engineering standards and guidelines to strengthen the Division’s competitiveness and achieve the needed product quality in a cost‑effective way.
  • Participates, identifies, and facilitates Continuous Improvement activities e.g. Kaizen events to improve cost/quality/delivery metrics.
  • Researches new manufacturing technology to improve productivity, cost and responsiveness. Recommends and implements changes to improve operational efficiency and/or quality standards.
  • Initiates and completes technical activities leading to new or improved products or processes for current or next generation programs.
  • Manages and guides efforts to continuously improve company performance related to the engineering system, cost and delivery requirements.

  • Develops and/or initiates new approaches to solve problems, issues or concerns identified during quality/engineering activities. Oversees projects that support engineering processes and analyze statistical process controls (SPC) to provide recommended improvements. Monitors statistical process controls.

What qualifications should I have?

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • 10 years of industry experience in Quality and/or Manufacturing; Aerospace preferred.
  • Experience with ISO, Six Sigma, AS9100 and statistical process controls preferred.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory/management experience required
