Senior Metal Bellows has been developing custom engineered bellows-based products to meet the needs of some of the world’s most demanding industries for over 65 years. SMB’s New Product Development Team is responsible for developing and releasing brand new, high quality, manufacturable, product designs for prototype and production manufacturing. Our customers rely on us to develop solutions that aren’t available anywhere else. We are seeking a motivated Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing New Product Development Team. With our bespoke product designs, you will have the opportunity to create something new that will be in use for decades across several diverse industries.
Job Summary: Under minimal direction from the New Product Development (NPD) Team Manager, this position will be responsible for developing detailed product designs. From creation of detail drawings of assembly, sub-assembly, and components to design of all related tooling; the Designer will use Design or Manufacturing and Assembly, to bring each new concept to market.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Prepare a wide variety of complex engineering drawings and designs in compliance with Company and ASME Y 14.5 standards using SolidWorks CAD software.
- Design and analyze components in relevant markets including Aerospace, Defense, Space, Oil and Gas, Medical, and Semiconductor industry.
- Work from customer drawings, concept designs, and NPD Team direction to produce high quality detailed designs.
- Design from engineering proposals and modified specifications, to produce manufacturable products using internal manufacturing capabilities, including design of necessary tooling/fixturing
- Research and provide recommendations on appropriate materials, tolerances, GD&T, and finishes required to meet design intent.
- Perform complex engineering calculations with regard to strength of materials, pressures, and effective areas, including use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
- Prepare assembly and detail drawings in conformance with layout and best practices for Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA)
- Host design reviews to support design iterations with the New Product Development Team members to approve and release drawings and other related engineering documentation.
- Revise models and drawings related to Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
- Provide Design support for activities related to issues that arise during production and development
JOB FUNCTIONS: DESIRABLE SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS
- BS degree in an Engineering field
- Minimum years relevant mechanical design experience
- SolidWorks and Product Data Management (PDM) experience required
- Formal training in 3D Modeling, FEA, CFD, and/or Thermal Analyses required
- Experience in Model Based Definition (MBD), DriveWorks, and Product Life Management (PLM) desired
