Level 2 Apprentice - Engineering Manufacturing Technician

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join our friendly and growing apprenticeship programme at Senior Bird Bellows. Our apprenticeships provide the opportunity to earn while you learn in an organisation committed to your professional development. Our apprentices develop specialist technical knowledge and skills to develop, produce or test products, processes or procedures that meet a customer specification in terms of quality, cost, and delivery as efficiently and effectively as possible.  

As an apprentice, you will work alongside experienced colleagues in our manufacturing business to gain valuable practical skills and experience in a hands-on environment and attend college as part of day release to study for your nationally recognised qualification.

Who is Senior Bird Bellows?

Based in Congleton, Cheshire, Senior Bird Bellows was established in 1975 as a family run operation serving the Petro-chemical and gas industries. Since then, we have evolved to become one of the industry leaders in the design, development and manufacture of pressure duct systems, flexible joints and insulation for highly regulated industries. We have established customers in aerospace (both civil and military), as well as in the nuclear, oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical sectors.

What will my responsibilities include?

  1. Ensure that the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) is used for the operations being performed and ensure that PPE is appropriately stored or replaced as necessary.
  2. Use only the production machinery and tools that you have been trained and authorised to operate.
  3. Ensure all materials and products are lifted and handled safely in accordance with manual handling guidelines (training provided).
  4. Adhere to the required standards of behaviour and discipline.
  1. Ensure that all materials and work in progress are protected from deterioration and damage, using the correct storage boxes or stillage’s provided. Ensure that positive identification and batch traceability are suitably maintained.
  2. Maintain production machinery and tooling in accordance with any required operator preventive maintenance instructions or schedules, recording as required the maintenance activities undertaken.
  3. Utilise tools and machinery in a safe manner and in accordance with all safety instructions. Ensure that any required guarding is suitably in place and positioned.   Immediately suspend use of and report any defective or unsafe tools, machinery, guarding or stopping devices to the Team Leader and HSE Officer.
  4. Read, interpret, and understand engineering drawings and associated shop packet paperwork (i.e., Job Card, Kitting Lists and Work Instructions) to determine how products are to be correctly manufactured.
  5. Ensure that any measuring or production equipment used (and requiring calibration) is within its re-calibration date prior to use, reporting any expired items to the Team Leader.
  6. Select tools, check condition and set up in accordance with job card and/or work instructions, reporting any defective, broken or excessively worn tooling to the Team Leader.  Ensure that all tooling is correctly and safely stored and located after use.
  7. Accurately record the time expended on production work to the correct works order number on the EFACS recording system.   Record components lost to the correct scrap code on the EFACS recording system.
  8. Ensure that all production related work activities and records comply with relevant quality standards and NADCAP requirements.
  9. Demonstrate a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  10. Use hand tools, production machinery and tooling to cut, machine, form, shape and size components to their required dimensions specified on engineering drawings.
  11. Use production machinery and tooling to resistance weld and join materials and components together in accordance with instructions and engineering drawing requirements.
  12. Visually check the part prior to starting work to ensure it meets the standards required.
  13. During each Job Card operation, check the quality of your work and confirm that it conforms to the requirements by recording & stamping the operation complete with any required measurements.  Verify that the product is free from foreign objects prior to passing to the next stage of processing.
  14. Attend training or participate in improvement events as required.  Support the Team Leader in the training of new or temporary personnel.
  15. Partake in cross-functional training to maintain a minimum of 4 in one coverage across all processes within the business.
  16. Provide support and have the flexibility to move to another Production Team, should operational demands require it.

What qualifications should I have?

  • Grade 3 or above in GCSE or equivalent in Maths & English

Is work experience essential?

  • Able to demonstrate general work place skills is essential (time keeping)
  • Work Experience in an Engineering / Manufacturing environment would be desirable
